Cable and television in general
Ok,
So a few weeks ago my wife and I gave up cable again. We have tried to do this a few times, but I usually cave in and have to get it as background noise as I work on my lappy or what have you. This time is different, I have a hard time justifying in my head spending 80+ dollars a month on something that I used maybe twice a week, to watch dirty jobs and mythbusters. It got to the point right before we turned it off that I would go over, turn it on, check the movie stations, then turn it right back off and go back to my lappy.
I think the first time we gave up cable, I felt bad cause I had just bought a new HDTV and thought that it would *go* to waste if I didn’t have the latest and greatest HD stations/movies/etc., but alas I can be a schmuck sometimes, as hard as that may be to believe ;). Now don’t get me wrong I have a PS3 and I absolutely love watching HD movies on it, and my tv looks fantastic, but there is a place for everything. I also recently came to the conclusion that I am an internet junkie, I work in from front of three monitors / two pc’s (windows for email / linux for work) all day long, then I go home and the first thing that I do is jump on my lappy and make sure something didn’t blow up @ work (yeah paranoia and such), but I work with some very *VERY* tempermental hardware, so it isn’t uncommon for something to happen in the five minutes it takes me to drive home.
Anyway I digress, back to the waste that is cable/television in general. I know that there are some good shows out there, I just don’t care enough nor do I trust enough people that actually watch tv to recommend them. That, and I am extremely picky about what I watch, I can’t start something halfway (even 2 or 3 episodes in) int0 a season, so that limits a lot of stuff, just due to the nature of my job. Also, most things don’t entertain me, I abhor sitcoms (by the standard definition of sitcoms), and the only shows I liked either get canceled or don’t get picked up. I loved the show on fox Brimstone (how many actually remember that show) and let’s not even start on the whole Firefly fiasco, again with fox…So the long and short of it is that I find it (tv) to be a waste of time and can find much more interesting ways to *waste* my time, from gaming to movies, from reading philosophy to comics.
