Books, games and regulators…

So I am a very lucky man, not only did I marry the most wonderful woman in the world, she is also uber supportive of my *expensive* hobbies, though I know she knows that I’m serious about it. My hobby happens to be SCUBA diving for those that don’t know me, and as anyone who has ever done the sport seriously (from rec to tech) it is an expensive sport to get involved with, as you have to buy lots of pricey equipment. I got certified about a year ago as my best friend had been a diver from a young age that had taken a hiatus but decided that it would be fun to get back into the water. I knew the instantly when I put on a BC and regulator underwater that I would be doing this for the rest of my life, I fell in love with it at that moment and haven’t looked back.

The initial payout was around 1000 for all the necessary equipment/classes etc. As you can probably tell from the title I just today purchased a brand new shiny set of regulators (1st Stage, 2 2nd Stages and Computer), it ran about 1200 in total, but since I am entrusting my life to this equipment, I believe that it is worth it. I have a local dive shop that I go to, one of the only two in San Diego county that do Nitrox fills San Diego Underwater Adventures affectionately known as sdua. They just hired an awesome new training director, but Chip and Liz are the best and will do what they can to help you out. They tend to lean more toward the tech side and are teaching GUE tech courses now. But I digress, so I got an Aeris AT400 1st and 2nd stage an A1 Octo 2nd Stage and an Aeris Atmos 2 computer. I also got a wrist mount compass and a new set of gloves, this is definitely for some happy making ;). My friend is being a butthead and difficult about what he’s going to order, but for those that know and love him, that’s just the usual. Hi D :-p!

On another note, I have been a gamer for a long time, and am known to be fairly good at them (I used to work as a game tester which helped). I own various systems, xbox, ps2 (2), psp, and ps3 (yes I work for sony ok). I don’t actually buy a lot of games as I get all first party titles for free, but I finally had to drink the koolaid and get Burnout Paradise, and I am in love with this freaking game. Not only did the developers do a top notch developing the game and content, but they are spending loads of time supporting the already shipped product with a new expansion coming out July 10th (Cagney) and two more planned for later in the year (this is definitely for some happy making as well). I would highly recommend this game as it’s just loads of fun, even if you’re just driving around.

So I have odd tastes in books, I like zombie novels, but I am also very interested in philosophy and sociology. I have been interested in philosophy for a long time, but now have narrowed down the time period which seems to draw me the most and that is German philosophers/sociologists from about 1800-1950 or so, these just seem to be the ones that I can relate too the most. On that note my father in law who happens to teach European Intellectual History for a major college here in San Diego (not state) is leaving his post of 35 years to move on to a job in Oregon to spread some of his knowledge to the Oregonians. The benefit is that in moving such a long distance he is getting rid of some older books that he doesn’t need anymore, and most of them happen to be in my general area of interest, which is *teh awesome*. The one that I just received was “From Max Weber Essays on Sociology”, this guy although I had never heard of him is known to be one of the fathers of modern sociology. I am a short way into his essay “Politics as a Vocation” but I am floored, this guys was as I like to say *retarded* smart, pure genius (usual caveat, he was human and had flaws of course). His thoughts on politics are macrocosmic not microcosmic and his writing (thus far from what I have read) deals with the overview of things not the drilled down how the affect this or that person, but the theory as a whole. I will definitely be reading more and posting more about him as I am excited to expanding my little pea brain. Sorry to my regs for the long post, but just feeling long winded. TTFN!
